The study was commissioned by the NV Industriebank LIOF, N.V. Noord-Brabant Development Agency (BOM), N.V. Economische Impuls Zeeland and Syntens Innovation Centre.
LIOF, BOM, Impuls Zeeland and Syntens requested InnoTact Consulting to give an overview of the opportunities for small and medium sized enterprises in the south part of the Netherlands that focus on biomedical materials.
First, InnoTact performed an international market study in order to get an overview of the complete field of biomedical materials. This market study was focused on concrete products and applications. These were grouped into a number of application/product areas. The market analysis was carried out by means of both desk research and interviews with experts in the field.
Subsequently, InnoTact mapped all companies in the south part of the Netherlands that focus on biomedical materials. These companies were classified according to the application areas as defined in the international market study.
Finally, all these companies were classified into technological (and geographical) clusters. These clusters were benchmarked to a foreign, very successful, biocluster that also focused on biomedical materials. Benchmarking was done by using the following criteria: (1) the availability and completeness of the supply chain needed to produce biomedical materials, (2) the presence of critical key-processes as developed by InnoTact and being instrumental for a successful setup of (potential) bioclusters.
The international position of the small and medium sized enterprises in south part of the Netherlands that focus on biomedical materials is strong. All the application areas that were identified in the international market study are present.
Also the total supply chain for the manufacturing of biomedical materials is available. Most important, the key-processes, instrumental for a successful (potential) biocluster, are well developed.
