The question

The Economic Affairs department of the Municipality of Amsterdam has asked InnoTact Consulting to set out the outlines of the long-term strategy of the Life Sciences sector in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (Amsterdam, surrounding towns and cities, the Provinces of Noord Holland and Flevoland and the Municipalities of Almere and Lelystad). Since 2004, Amsterdam has been actively developing the Amsterdam BioMed Cluster. It wants the efforts to boost the Life Sciences sector to yield a high profit. The target group at which the outlines are aimed are directors, managers and other people involved in the Life Sciences sector of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.

What InnoTact did

Life Sciences activities will only grow in a cluster development. A biocluster is feasible, but it requires efforts on all fronts. Authorities, government institutions, businesses (larger businesses, SMEs, the Chamber of Commerce), knowledge institutions (universities, university medical centres and research institutions) and development organisations each have a specific role in this process.

InnoTact Consulting has thoroughly characterised, categorised and analysed the Life Sciences businesses, knowledge institutions and organisations in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. For the first time, we got a clear picture of the Life Sciences sub-sectors where the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area has a strong position, the extent of the presence of the value chains in the region and what the potential is of collaboration with the surrounding areas. Parallel to the analysis, the consultants interviewed a large number of stakeholders from the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area Life Sciences sector about their vision on that sector.

The result

The first result was a clear map of the activities and the special strengths of the Life Sciences sector in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. Based on the identified functional competencies and the coherence with strengths and initiatives in adjoining regions, InnoTact Consulting listed six focal points and gave advice on the collaboration form in which these focal points can be expanded best. On 7 April 2010, InnoTact presented the outlines of the strategic master plan for the Life Sciences sector at the residence of the mayor of Amsterdam to thirty invitees from the Life Sciences sector within and beyond the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.
