The "Noordelijke ontwikkelingsmaatschappij N.V. NOM" asked InnoTact Consulting to determine what the prospects and possibilities are for ‘Bioprocessing’ as a motor for the economic development in the north of the Netherlands.
We applied a phased approach in order to soundly substantiate our response to this question.
We provided an insight into ‘Bioprocessing” in the broadest sense of the word during the initial exploratory phase: what is Bioprocessing, in which industrial sectors is it applied, which conditions have been set for the physical infrastructure, which type of knowledge infrastructure is required and what are the key international trends and developments. This exploratory phase was executed against the backdrop of the actual industrial situation in the north of the Netherlands and the existing knowledge infrastructure there and also contained a comprehensive strength-weakness analysis.
The findings formed the grounds for NV NOM to arrange a follow-up strategy. This was possible by creating an insight into the formation of industrial activity in the field of bioprocessing on the one hand, and, on the other hand, by indicating what is available within the knowledge base in the north of the Netherlands. We made a distinction between bioprocessing for the pharmaceutical industry, the foodstuff and dairy sector and the agro sector in the further detailing.
Based on our findings, InnoTact recommended continuing the further development of ‘Bioprocessing’, with the primary focus on the pharmaceutical, foodstuff and dairy applications and to set up a single dedicated Bioprocessing expertise centre.
The entire exploratory phase and the strategy development enabled NV NOM to obtain a clear impression of the prospects and opportunities but also the limitations of Bioprocessing as a motor for the economic development of the north of the Netherlands. The InnoTact study laid the foundations for the future development of the successful expertise centre ‘Carbohydrate Competence Center’ which focuses on subjects including research and development of bioprocessing and carbohydrates. InnoTact played a crucial role during the begin phase of the Carbohydrate Competence Center; for more information see our product ‘developing public-private partnerships’.
