The question

Agentschap NL has the Innovation programme Life Sciences & Health offer, on behalf of the government, to support small to medium sized enterprises by studying the innovation and partnership opportunities outside the Netherlands among others. Agentschap NL asked InnoTact Consulting to execute a balanced study into the prospects in India for the Dutch Life Sciences SME. The agency of EZ requested that InnoTact indicate where, how and which tools small to medium sized enterprises should use to respond to the Indian Life Sciences sector.

What InnoTact did

The Indian Life Sciences sector is growing strongly. InnoTact has been actively studying the unknown opportunities and supporting Indian Life Sciences companies in India since 2006. They do this under the name BioPortEurope. InnoTact has also accumulated experience in the Indian Life Sciences sector in addition to the substantial experience with the Dutch sector. This enabled them to approach the matter from both perspectives.

The Indian economy was outlined using a broad perspective initially, whereby the Indian Life Sciences sector was subsequently magnified: key companies, knowledge institutes, bio-clusters, science parks and the turbulent growth of this sector.

As a follow up to this, InnoTact drew up a general inventory of the Dutch Life Sciences SME.

Based on these two approach routes, we were then in a position to describe the match between Indian demand and Dutch supply. We recorded our findings in a concise report for Agentschap NL and held a presentation during a workshop organised by Agentschap NL.

The result

The presentation (in Dutch) by InnoTact Consulting during the workshop on 27 March 2009 organised by Agentschap NL showed evidence of the practical experience in working with Life Sciences companies and bodies in India. The presentation inspired various people in attendance to convert their intention to expand their market to India into initial concrete actions.

Based on the findings and in close cooperation with the Indian Technical Scientific Attaché in New Delhi, Agentschap NL developed a follow-up strategy for cooperation between the Netherlands and India in the field of Life Sciences and innovation. A Programme of Cooperation between the Netherlands and India has been signed in the meantime. This programme makes financial support possible for bilateral partnerships in the field of Life Sciences.
