H.J. (Hans) Schuitmaker, PhD

Hans is an ambitious and pragmatic scientist with years of experience in both academic multidisciplinary research and commercial life sciences. His strength lies in developing effective research projects and translating these into new scientific insights within commercial applications.

Hans graduated from the University of Groningen with a degree in animal physiology.  Three years later he received his PhD in medicine from the University of Leiden. Subsequently, he worked for several years as a researcher at the Leiden University Medical Centre.

In 1999 Hans shifted to the commercial side of life sciences and worked on the development of cosmetic applications of photodynamic technology. Two years later he was the co-founder of a new life sciences enterprise that focussed on deactivating pathogenic micro-organisms in blood products. The company was ultimately sold profitably to a foreign company. Afterwards Hans applied his scientific and commercial experience as a programme manager at Top Institute Pharma where he was responsible for managing various public and private syndicates. In addition to all this, for more than 25 years Hans has been an enthusiastic and active reserve officer in the Royal Land Forces (rank of major).
